Tectonic Plates

Colombia is about 110 miles from the Coco’s plate. To the East is the Nazca Plate. It sits right on the South American plate and the Caribbean Plate.

Subduction at these boundaries has pushed up rock making mountains that exist on the coast of Colombia.
This country is part of the Ring of Fire, because of the collision of the South American Plate and the Nazca plate, Colmbia is at a high risk for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It is also at risk of flooding and tsunamis.

  1. very true. Thank you for the links. Maybe in the future you could add an image too to show what you post about. It will help your classmates to follow your posts better. Yes, all those volcanic mountains really follow the coast as you say, all because of where the country is located...will be interesting if when you discuss earthquakes next week, their main locations coincide with what you think already,..that most of the shaking is close to that subduction zone...

  2. Hi Janie,

Thanks for your insightful post about Columbia's location to plate boundaries; I appreciate the helpful links you included as well. I didn't know that the country was settled right on top of two different plates. It makes sense that there would be many dangers that natural hazards pose towards Columbia.
The country I'm following, Japan, is also located in the Ring of Fire, so our countries share many of the same potential natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, flooding, etc.
I look forward to learning more about Columbia in your future posts!
